Inside the limo, Kane finished a tumbler of Red Bull and set the glass on the mahogany bar. The LED lights on the side paneling made the glass glow an other-worldly blue.
âIs everything set?â He asked the question into his bluetooth earpiece, making him look as though he was speaking to himself.
âYes, General Ki.â The thin Indian accent was that of the man he knew as 8/15/47. The manâs real name was Suresh, the leader of a far-right Hindu nationalist group in Southern India.
âItâs ten after ten.â
âYes, sir. Twenty minutes.â
âIâll leave the line open,â Kane said.
âGood.â
Without ending the call, Kane turned his attention to his assistant. âAre you ready?â
Kid pointed to a low rooftop across the street from Club God. âThere, right?â
âRight.â
The assistant handed him three small white pills. âThis will numb the pain some. But, sirâ¦â Kid shook his head. âThis will be no fun.â He smiled.
Kane laughed. âYou ever been shot?â
âNo. Iâve heard it hurts.â
Kane swallowed the pills with a bottle of water. âMake sure you have more of these on the helicopter.â
The assistant nodded. âAnd Dr. Bryan will have morphine.â
Kane pointed to a corner. âStart there, and make sure youâre not so close it looks staged, okay. Itâs gotta look like Iâm just going to the club and youâre a loser fan.â
The limo stopped at the corner and Kid got out.
Alone in the limo, Kane paid special attention to the sensations of his body. He didnât feel the codeine kicking in yet, but he almost regretted taking it. Heâd worked for this for years and he didnât want his senses numbed when he was so close to the finish line. Excellence required sacrifice. Pain. His whole body coursed with excitement and tingled with anticipation. He doubted three codeine pills could take that away.
He tapped a button and a sliding glass divider retracted. âIâll be getting out in about five minutes,â he told the driver. âDrop me halfway between where you dropped Kid and the front entrance.â
âWill do, boss.â
âAnd when you drop me off, head home for the night. Iâll be leaving on the chopper.â
