Inside the limo, Kane finished a tumbler of Red Bull and set the glass on the mahogany bar. The LED lights on the side paneling made the glass glow an other-worldly blue.

“Is everything set?” He asked the question into his bluetooth earpiece, making him look as though he was speaking to himself.

“Yes, General Ki.” The thin Indian accent was that of the man he knew as 8/15/47. The man’s real name was Suresh, the leader of a far-right Hindu nationalist group in Southern India.

“It’s ten after ten.”

“Yes, sir. Twenty minutes.”

“I’ll leave the line open,” Kane said.

“Good.”

Without ending the call, Kane turned his attention to his assistant. “Are you ready?”

Kid pointed to a low rooftop across the street from Club God. “There, right?”

“Right.”

The assistant handed him three small white pills. “This will numb the pain some. But, sir…” Kid shook his head. “This will be no fun.” He smiled.

Kane laughed. “You ever been shot?”

“No. I’ve heard it hurts.”

Kane swallowed the pills with a bottle of water. “Make sure you have more of these on the helicopter.”

The assistant nodded. “And Dr. Bryan will have morphine.”

Kane pointed to a corner. “Start there, and make sure you’re not so close it looks staged, okay. It’s gotta look like I’m just going to the club and you’re a loser fan.”

The limo stopped at the corner and Kid got out.

Alone in the limo, Kane paid special attention to the sensations of his body. He didn’t feel the codeine kicking in yet, but he almost regretted taking it. He’d worked for this for years and he didn’t want his senses numbed when he was so close to the finish line. Excellence required sacrifice. Pain. His whole body coursed with excitement and tingled with anticipation. He doubted three codeine pills could take that away.

He tapped a button and a sliding glass divider retracted. “I’ll be getting out in about five minutes,” he told the driver. “Drop me halfway between where you dropped Kid and the front entrance.”

“Will do, boss.”

“And when you drop me off, head home for the night. I’ll be leaving on the chopper.”
